Certification process

ISO certification goes through agreement, a two-stage certification audit, a certification decision and the issue of a certificate valid for 3 years, subject to successful annual surveillance audits. Audits are conducted in Bulgarian throughout the country, and the certificate is issued by CERTIND S.A.

Stage 1 and Stage 2 — what is checked

The initial certification audit is always conducted in two stages — as set out in ISO/IEC 17021-1.

Stage 1

Are you ready for the audit?

  • review of the management system’s documented information
  • evaluation of site conditions and readiness for Stage 2
  • confirmation of the scope, processes and sites
  • checking that internal audits and the management review have been planned and carried out
  • planning of Stage 2

Stage 2

Does the system work?

  • on-site evaluation of the implementation and effectiveness of the system
  • interviews, observation and review of records
  • checking that objectives are being achieved
  • report with the findings and any nonconformities

The certification decision is made after the body has reviewed and accepted the corrections and corrective actions and verified their effectiveness. Sometimes this requires an additional verification.

The certification decision is made by persons who did not take part in the audit — an impartiality requirement.

Certification cycle

Three years, four audits

The certificate remains valid as long as the surveillance audits are passed successfully. Recertification starts a new cycle.

  1. Certificate — Year 0
  2. First surveillance — within 1 year
  3. Second surveillance — within 2 years
  4. Recertification — within 3 years

Year 0Certificate

The certificate is issued for 3 years from the date of initial issue.

Questions and answers

Questions about the process

Short answers about the certification process.

How long does ISO certification take?

The overall timeframe depends mainly on how ready the management system is and on the time needed to address any nonconformities.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2?

Stage 1 checks the documented information and readiness for the audit, and plans Stage 2. Stage 2 assesses on site whether the system is implemented and working effectively.

What happens if the auditors find nonconformities?

For a minor nonconformity, the certification decision is made once your corrective action plan has been accepted. For a major one — after the corrections and corrective actions have been verified.

How long is an ISO certificate valid?

Three years from initial issue, provided the first and second surveillance audits are passed successfully. The recertification audit is conducted before the certificate expires, so that there is no gap.

What language are the audits conducted in?

In Bulgarian, throughout the country.

Can I use the certification logo?

Yes. Together with the certificate, you receive the CERTIND S.A. certification logo. How the logo may be used.

Can the certification body implement the system for me?

No. The body that certifies you cannot provide consultancy on the same system — an impartiality requirement under ISO/IEC 17021-1. Implementation is carried out by you or by an independent consultant.
