ISO 50001 certification of energy management systems

We provide accredited certification of energy management systems to ISO 50001 in Bulgaria through CERTIND S.A. — energy management is within the scope of its RENAR accreditation (No. SM 041). The standard turns consumption into a measurable system: where the energy goes, what the baseline is, what the targets are and whether the improvement is demonstrated. The audit is conducted in Bulgarian, and you will receive a tailored quote within two hours.

The standard at a glance

What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 is the international standard that sets out the requirements for an energy management system. It does not prescribe what equipment to buy — it requires you to know where your energy goes, to set targets and to demonstrate with figures that consumption is improving.

The current edition is ISO 50001:2018 (BDS EN ISO 50001:2018). The standard is applicable to organizations of any type and size — manufacturing, commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, transport, municipalities. The bigger the energy bill, the faster the system pays for itself.

At its core is the energy review: it establishes where and how much energy is consumed, which are the significant energy users and what the baseline is against which improvement will be measured. This is the source of the targets, the action plans and the indicators that the auditor checks.

Enterprises that are subject to a mandatory energy efficiency audit under the Energy Efficiency Act may be exempted from it if they have an energy management system certified by an independent body to BDS EN ISO 50001. The specific assessment rests with the competent authority — so check the conditions for your enterprise before relying on the exemption.

Who ISO 50001 is for

  • Manufacturing Enterprises with high bills for electricity, gas, steam or fuel.
  • Buildings and property Hotels, shopping centres, hospitals, office buildings.
  • Transport and logistics Vehicle fleets, warehouses and cold stores with high consumption.
  • Public sector Municipalities and administrations that manage building stock and lighting.

The logic of the standard

From consumption to proven improvement

ISO 50001 works along a single chain, and the auditor follows it for each significant energy user: what it consumes, how much, what it is measured against and what has been done to reduce it.

  1. 1Energy review

Establishing what consumes energy, how much and of what type — based on data, not impressions.

  2. 2Significant users

Identifying the equipment and processes with the largest share of consumption.

  3. 3Baseline

Fixing the reference point against which improvement will be measured.

  4. 4Targets and plans

Setting targets and specific actions, each with an owner, a deadline and an expected effect.

  5. 5Measurement and review

Measuring consumption, comparing it with the baseline and having it reviewed by management.

What the auditor looks for in the numbers

The standard requires energy performance indicators and a baseline against which they are compared. Here is what makes these numbers convincing — and what undermines them.

What is expected
  • BaselineA clear period and the conditions under which it was measured.
  • IndicatorsLinked to the activity — per unit of output, floor area or trip.
  • Measurement planWho measures what, with what and how often.
  • ComparabilityAdjustments for changes in production or weather.
What proves improvement
  • TrendValues over several periods, not a single snapshot.
  • Link to actionI can see the measure, and I can see its effect in the numbers.
  • Management reviewDecisions taken because of these numbers.
  • Corrective actionsWhat was done when the target was not met.
What fails an audit
  • Bills onlyInvoices are not an indicator — they are input data.
  • An indicator without a baselineA number that is not compared with anything.
  • Unmeasured usersA significant energy user with no data at all.
  • A plan on paperTargets with no owner, no deadline and no follow-up.

You do not need an expensive monitoring system to pass the audit. You need understandable, regularly maintained numbers — and decisions that show in them.

How ISO 50001 certification works

The process is the same for every organization and follows ISO/IEC 17021-1, the international standard for certification bodies. Only the audit duration differs — it depends on the number of employees, the sites and the complexity of the activity.

The process in detail
  1. 01 Enquiry and quoteYou describe your activity, number of employees and sites. You receive a quote with the scope, audit duration and price.within 2 hours during business hours
  2. 02 Contract and audit planOnce the contract is signed, we agree the dates, the scope and the audit team.dates that suit you
  3. 03 Stage 1 — readiness reviewThe auditor reviews the scope, the energy review, the baseline, the indicators and the action plans, and assesses whether the system is ready.documents, scope, readiness
  4. 04 Stage 2 — on-site auditThe work is checked on site — the measurements, the significant energy users, the measures implemented, the values achieved against the baseline and the decisions taken on that basis.in Bulgarian, at your premises
  5. 05 Corrective actionsIf nonconformities are found, you are given a deadline to correct them and submit evidence.only if needed
  6. 06 Decision and certificateAn independent certification decision and issue of the certificate by CERTIND S.A.recognized under Global ACI

What the price of ISO 50001 certification depends on

The price of the certificate is not fixed, because it is calculated from several factors, including the audit days your organization requires, which are determined under the mandatory document Global ACI-TECH-3-004 (formerly IAF MD 5).

ISO certification pricing
  • 01Complexity and sectorManufacturing with many energy-intensive installations requires more time than an office building.
  • 02Number of sitesSites, buildings and facilities in the scope. Each site is audited or checked on a sample basis.
  • 03Number of employeesFull-time and part-time staff.
  • 04Number and type of standardsIn an integrated system with ISO 14001 or ISO 9001, the combined audit is usually shorter.
What is not included in the certification price

A consultant to implement the system is a separate cost. A certification body cannot provide consultancy to the organizations it certifies — this is an impartiality requirement under ISO/IEC 17021-1.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about ISO 50001

Answers to the questions our clients ask most often before certification.

Didn’t find an answer? Call us — we will answer right away. +359 887 407 840 office@escert.com

Is ISO 50001 certification accredited?

Yes. Energy management is within the scope of CERTIND S.A.’s accreditation by RENAR (No. SM 041) to ISO/IEC 17021-1. Accreditation documents.

Does it exempt us from the mandatory energy audit?

It may. Under the Energy Efficiency Act, enterprises with an energy management system certified by an independent body to BDS EN ISO 50001 may be exempted from the mandatory audit. The decision for a specific enterprise rests with the competent authority — check the conditions before relying on it.

Do we have to invest in equipment?

Not necessarily. The standard requires management, not specific machines. Many of the gains come from maintenance, settings, operating modes and discipline in metering. Investments are planned where the numbers show that they pay off.

Can it be combined with ISO 14001?

Yes, and it makes sense. The two standards follow the same structure and use shared processes and records. With an integrated system, the combined audit is usually shorter than two separate audits. See ISO 14001.

How long is the certificate valid?

Three years. Surveillance audits are carried out in the second and third years, and after the end of the cycle comes recertification, which keeps the certificate valid.
